Brief interview with Rómulo Vega-González | Breve entrevista com Rómulo Vega-González

In the world of Early Music and the lute in particular it’s very common for musicians from different parts of the world to know each other or sharing musical experiences at some point in their careers. Recently, I met Rómulo Vega-González, director, lutenist, vihuelist and tenor of the Costa Rican renaissance group "Garcimuñoz", a musician that had already drawn my attention through some well-produced videos posted on YouTube.

"Garcimuñoz" is a vocal and instrumental group made up of mostly musicians who have dedicated themselves to the interpretation of Renaissance music for three decades. In 1991, they named the group "Garcimuñoz", in memory of the first Spanish city founded in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, in 1561.

When the opportunity arose to exchange some ideas with Rómulo (RVG), I did not hesitate.

Lute-the instrument - How did you have the idea for the group?

RVG - I created Ensemble Garcimuñoz twenty years ago or so after having been a member of the first Costa Rican early music ensemble, Collegium Musicum, between 1980-1990. I first got together some friends of mine who already had participated in choirs. I decided to name the ensemble "Garçimuñoz", in honor of the first Spanish city founded in Costa Rica - Castillo de Garçimuñoz.

Lute-the instrument – In which places you already played?

RVG - We've played in different concert halls and theaters in Costa Rica, Mexico as a group, but most of the members have participated as singers and soloists in different concert halls in the United States and Europe.

Lute-the instrument - In your experience, how is people’s receptivity to this type of music?

RVG - In general terms, people always get a nice impression of the music and the instruments. Some even get hooked on it and become followers of this type of music. Some even learn to play an instrument. One of my fellow harpsichordists fell in love with early music the first time he went to a harpsichord concert. The same happened to an organist I know.

Lute-the instrument - Based on the reality of Costa Rica, do you believe there’s market in Latin America for musicians, teachers, and obviously, consumers of lute and vihuela music?

RVG - In Costa Rica, I'd say that the teaching and performance market is modest, but I am sure it'll grow in the future. However, I dare say that the consumers of lute and vihuela music is larger. What is important is to send the new generations to study in renowned schools abroad.

Lute-the instrument – Do you have plans and any institutional support to record a CD?

RVG - We're planning to record a CD next year as a cultural project, and we're recording music for a Liechtenstein-sponsored radio station, ICER, that is being broadcast in local radio stations both in large cities and in smaller local radio stations of the country-side for people who do not have the opportunity to visit the important concert halls.
Thanks for the opportunity of sharing our work in this blog.

Lute-the instrument - Mr. González, thank you for your availability. Best wishes of success for you and Garçimuñoz, until a next opportunity.

"Non peccando altri chel core" (Bartolomeo Tromboncino-1509) by Rómulo Vega-González

Lute-the instrument – Como surgiu a idéia de fazer o grupo?

About a month after my basic level (4 years) graduation recital, I also finished the admission tests to the technical level, the second half of the long lute course. From here things will be even more interesting.

For the past year I have been preparing an extra final course work, a personal Renaissance lute method, the result of four years of study, research of repertoire, valuable instructions from teacher Dell'Isola, exercises and technique, maintenance of the instrument, how to change frets and strings and more than 30 musical pieces of increasing difficulty.

This work corresponds to my personal path in this instrument and can be easily adapted to future students, if in the future the option of becoming a teacher opens to me.

The first version of my personal Renaissance lute method will be printed this week. It will be a work to improve over time. I'll write soon about the details.

Graduation Recital: Programme and details | Recital de Formatura: Programa e detalhes

Last June 10th, me and my colleague Tiago completed the Basic Lute Course at the Brasília School of Music - EMB, with a duration of 4 years.
This milestone in our lives was celebrated with a recital in the main theater of the EMB - Levino de Alcântara theatre. Due to our musical partnership of nearly three years we decided to do a recital together, enhanced by the opportunity that arose early in the semester to play two trios for lute and violin by Vivaldi with other musicians and our teacher, Fernando Dell'Isola.
As the lute is an instrument of limited sound capacity, we decided to put a few dozen chairs on stage, so that spectators and guests could be closer to us.
We started the concert with four renaissance lute duos. During the third, I felt the nervousness come over me and my right hand as had happened with the theorbo last year, but it lasted a very short time because I was "stubborn", and still from the same song I calmed myself, diving into the emotionality of the music until I reached my solos. Gradually my confidence increased, until I reached the Vivaldi trios, where overconfidence and the atmosphere of “party end” made my concentration break a few moments, but without having reflected on the music and sound quality.
In the end it was wonderful to receive the congratulations of those who attended and could socialize with colleagues and friends. We ended the day with a dinner party where we finally realize that a new door opened to us with possible new musical opportunities, and perhaps, the professionalism in some years.

A few weeks ago, during a get-together of friends at the house of the photographer Kenia Ribeiro, arose an opportunity to make a a photo session right there in the midst of nature without any preparation or care about image or clothing. In those photos I play the 8-course Renaissance lute Hans Frei and the theorbo.
It was the first time I had the opportunity to be the subject of a photographic work so well done by a professional as talented as Kenia.

I invite you to visit the professional website of Kenia Ribeiro, where beyond the outdoors photo session with me, there are several samples of her amazing work: http://kenia.art.br

Early Music get-together in Brasília | Tertúlia de música antiga em Brasília

In April a small get-together of musicians was made, with the presence of some students and already graduated musicians of the Early Music section of the School of Music of Brasília – EMB.
Besides the pleasant conversations and dinner, the get-together served to deepen our friendship and respect for each other and to take our own wives or husbands to a true Early Music family in Brasília.
It was also an opportunity and privilege to listen to Felippe Maravalhas playing Weiss and Falckenhagen in his new baroque lute, and present a duet with the Viola da Gamba player Iara Ungarelli.
We look forward to another meeting soon.

The most important album of my basic course | O álbum mais importante do meu curso básico

While starting this post I was surprised about how I didn’t write about it before. It is a simple and unassuming record, but nothing less than perfection. I know several perfect lute albums, combining the genius of the songwriting with the talent of lutenists aswell as the quality of sound and recording.

One of the albums that fit this group is "music for vihuela" by Dolores Costoyas. Not only the interpretation of the music of Luys de Narvaez and Miguel de Fuenllana is outstanding, the sound that the argentine lutenist takes from the vihuela is wonderful, but the actual album as a whole is a lute masterclass. No other album has taught me so much as this one, at various levels and details, including learning to breathe throughout the songs. It has been responsible for the biggest jump so far in my musical progression. Every time you listen to it you learn something, you drink from the source, from the absolute perfection. Close your eyes and you’ll visualize yourself in the Spanish mid-sixteenth century courts.

Conversation with Bernhard Hofstötter | Conversa com Bernhard Hofstötter

Today I talked a few minutes with the Austrian lutenist Bernhard Hofstötter. I knew his work because he recorded a CD of Weiss’s Suites and Concerto for two lutes in partnership with Dolores Costoyas, which I really love. I was very touched by his kindness.

The context of this conversation was my interest in becoming a lute teacher one day and to know what qualifications are needed to teach in music schools and conservatories, or if those positions are filled only by artistic criteria (I remember at least one of the world’s most famous lutenists which doesn’t have a university degree in music). I was very honored by the attention he paid to me and of his encouragement of my ideas for the future, having commended the initiative of this blog and be surprised by the 7000 visits that it already has.
When I asked him about his work, Mr. Hofstötter told me he just recorded his solo CD with works by Weiss, which is now in edition phase. It will be in stores soon.

Weiss and Sentimentalism | Weiss e Sentimentalismo

While I await the construction start of my new baroque lute, I have my ipod full of Sylvius Leopold Weiss’s music. As I listen to every detail of the oeuvre of this unknown genius, I remember immediately of one of my favorite films - "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski, which has its soundtrack made entirely with pieces of the polish composer Fryderyk Chopin. A soulful music full of contrasts and deeply connected to the states of the human soul.
When I had this thought, the comparison seemed absurd because how this contemporary and friend of JS Bach might have something to do with a romantic of the first half of the nineteenth century? It’s just that the music of Weiss is so full of emotion and striking expressiveness that moves us and levitates us...

The answer has to do with a school of thought called "Sentimentalism," or "Empfindsamkeit", which appeared around 1720 and continued until the time of the French Revolution. This philosophy came at the end of French rationalism, which was used to discipline societies under Absolutism. It began with the break up with the church and religiousness, returning to Humanism and the belief that Man is good by nature and that his ability to feel could be expressed without restriction and sensitivity starts to be seen as a moral quality and not a weakness of spirit.

A motet for new friends | Um moteto para novos amigos

This week, while I decide the contents of my graduation recital and start rehearsing the Vivaldi trios to perform in the middle of the semester, I want to homage some new friends with a post a little different than usual. Last week I traveled to a place literally out of this world, where my consciousness was expanded and I learned new practices more conscious about the environment, myself and others around me, about happiness and fulfillment, and also the sustainability of human beings in the future of the planet.
In moments of meditation, I used to hear the waves come together with my own breathing, but during this week some of my silences were trips by the sound of the "Spem in Alium" motet by Thomas Tallis. Now here, back to my musical life when I hear this song I remember the starry sky and the silents lightnings across all the horizon of that heaven.
I dedicate this post and this divine music to them. Thanks for existing. Pax Vobiscum.

Spem in Alium - Thomas Tallis - 8 choirs (40 voices) 8 coros (40 vozes)

Pax Vobiscum.
