STING | Songs from the Labyrinth

Lute classes are almost restarting, after a huge break, which inevitably had an impact in this blog. But I would like to recommend a spectacular album for this time of holidays, at least in the Northern Hemisphere.

"Songs from the Labyrinth", released by Deutsche Grammophon in 2006, is a compilation of some of the most famous songs of John Dowland (1563-1626), the melancholic English composer, exiled from his homeland for being Catholic. The big attraction is, however, the singer, the pop star Sting, accompanied by the lutenist Edin Karamazov.
This album is controversial for many Early Music purists, for a small number is even an abomination, inevitably associating the lute songs with voices of counter-tenors or groups of classical singers, highly trained in developing the voice. But in my personal opinion, the album gives a refreshing touch to the music of Dowland, often recorded on CD, and perhaps, it maybe even closer to what Dowland had in mind when he composed, because during that time, this type of music was played much more in private homes and even in the streets, than in Court. In the vast majority of times it would be sung by less sophisticated voices.
The production is perfect and the interpretation of Karamazov is, at least, inspired. Sting also includes an essay on how he discovered lute music, and between songs he reads excerpts of letters of the time. The effect is very pleasant, helping the listener to be sweetly taken to the beginning of the seventeenth century.

In the end, what makes me happier in this album is the huge amount of people who came to hear the music for lute, by CD or by the appearances of Sting and Karamazov on television. And I will always have this British singer in high regard for making this courageous rescue and for having risked his reputation to do so. Brilliant work!

As aulas de alaúde estão quase a começar, após uma enorme pausa, que inevitavelmente teve impacto neste blog. Mas gostaria de recomendar um álbum espetacular para esta época de férias, pelo menos no Hemisfério Norte.

“Songs from the Labyrinth”, lançado pela Deutsche Grammophon em 2006, é uma compilação de algumas das músicas mais famosas de John Dowland (1563-1626), o melancólico compositor inglês, exilado da sua terra natal por ser católico. A grande atração é, no entanto o intérprete, a estrela pop Sting, acompanhado pelo alaúdista Edin Karamazov.
Este álbum é polémico para muitos puristas da música antiga, para um pequeno número é até uma abominação, associando inevitavelmente as canções para alaúde com vozes de contra-tenores ou grupo de cantores eruditos altamente treinados no aperfeiçoamento da voz. Mas em minha opinião pessoal, o álbum dá um toque refrescante à música de Dowland, tantas vezes gravada em disco, e quiçá, talvez até seja mais próximo do que Dowland tinha em mente quando compôs, pois durante essa época, esse tipo de música era tocada muito mais em casas particulares e até nas ruas, do que na côrte. Na vasta maioria das vezes seria até cantada por vozes menos sofisticadas.
A produção é perfeita e a interpretação de Karamazov é no mínimo inspirada. Sting ainda inclui um ensaio sobre como descobriu a música de alaúde e lê excertos de cartas da época entre algumas músicas. O efeito é bem agradável, ajudando o ouvinte a ser docemente levado até ao início do século XVII.

No final, aquilo que me deixa mais feliz neste álbum, é a quantidade enorme de gente que passou a conhecer a música de alaúde, pelo CD ou pelas aparições de Sting e Karamazov na televisão. E sempre terei o cantor britânico em grande consideração por ter feito esse corajoso resgate e ter arriscado a sua reputação para o fazer. Brilhante trabalho!
