Yesterday, I spent 30 minutes of my time signing up on Wikipedia - an online free "collaborative" encyclopedia and learning the basics in order to contribute to the entries "lute" and "alaúde", putting my blog at the public’s disposal in the informative resources section of the external links.
Unfortunately, I was told by friends from the Ancient Music scene, that my entries on wikipedia were deleted by administrators and I tried to understand why the hyperlink to this blog was deleted. The reasons can be three: or I vandalized Wikipedia, or I spammed, or I violated the policy of neutrality. Well, if the moderator does not know to be neutral, these three reasons are very concerning.
After getting to know over two hundred people in the Early Music of various countries, be them musicians, organizers, teachers and fans, I think I can answer these questions:

To the Wikipedia administrators of the "lute" and "alaúde" sections, which I don’t really know if they know anything about the instruments, live from contributions from people like me that share freely to everyone in the internet. There’s information provided by my personal research on links contained in wikipedia. I get emails with questions about the lute and respond whenever I can, but next time I get a question from a person associated with this free "collaborative" encyclopedia, maybe I will not be able to cooperate. After all, as many have said, Wikipedia does not bring absolute truths. It is only controlled by people who take their administrator position to the extreme, removing useful information in a subjective and petty way, as if through collaboration we were practicing competition or the invasion of a personal fiefdom.

Ontem, gastei 30 minutos do meu tempo a inscrever-me na wikipedia – uma enciclopédia “colaborativa” online e a aprender o básico para poder dar o meu contributo para a entrada “lute” e “alaúde”, colocando o meu blog à disposição do público na secção de recursos informativos em ligações externas.
Infelizmente, fui informado por amigos do cenário da Música Antiga, que as entradas que dei no wikipedia foram apagadas por administradores e procurei entender porque razão o hiperlink a este blog foi apagado. As razões podem ser três: Ou vandalizei a wikipedia, ou fiz spam, ou violei a política de neutralidade. Bom, se o moderador não souber ser neutral, essas três razões são muito relativas.
Depois de travar conhecimento com mais de duzentas pessoas na Música Antiga de diversos países, sejam músicos, organizadores, professores e admiradores, creio que poderei responder a essas perguntas:

Aos administradores da Wikipedia das secções “lute” e “alaúde”, que não sei realmente se sabem alguma coisa sobre os instrumentos, vivem das contribuições de pessoas como eu, que as dispõem livremente a todos na Internet. Há informações providenciadas pelas minhas pesquisas pessoais em hiperligações contidas na wikipedia. Recebo e-mails com perguntas sobre o alaúde e respondo sempre que posso, mas da próxima vez que receber alguma pergunta de uma pessoa ligada a esta enciclopédia “colaborativa”, talvez não possa colaborar. Afinal de contas, como já muita gente diz, a Wikipedia não traz verdades absolutas. É apenas controlada por pessoas que levam a sua condição de administrador ao extremo, suprimindo informações úteis de um modo subjetivo e mesquinho, como se através da colaboração estivéssemos praticando a competição ou a invasão de algum feudo pessoal.

Internet Downloads | Downloads da Internet

I would like to share my views on the so called "piracy" on the Internet. I have downloaded music from the Internet, moreover, I believe all the people I know have already done so to a greater or lesser degree. It seems to me something resulting of a new technology, of a new way of playing the music in the comfort of home, car or iPod, which are the artists who should adapt and worry about and not the consumer.

We note that many artists, who should worry about the quality of their product - the music - are actually concerned about their sales without regard to the consumer. What is important is the sale, even to the point of putting in the CD some laws by which I can hear the product where I spent my money (so it is mine) but I can not re-record, put on the net, ultimately, do whatever I want with something that is my property.

I leave a personal example that I still didn’t hear on radio or TV. The overwhelming majority of CD's I bought from my adolescence until now have been through personal discovery. My curiosity led me to ask to listen to strange CDs in stores and in recent years, to download songs from the net, that when please me, make me want to buy those CDs. That is, hundreds of artists had their CDs purchased after I have heard their music on the Internet.

If some people download from the Internet without buying the product, isn’t there are others who use the Internet to check the quality of the songs? Funny that the most severe critics that I’ve heard to the tens of millions of people who are supposed "Internet pirates", came from small expression artists, mostly because they’re overcome in time and have difficulty in embracing the new technologies and new characteristics of the market.
I wonder if U2 or Madonna cares about the music downloading from the Internet? And what about the obscure artist in Central Asia, that launches a CD through a tiny label? Isn’t he going to be delighted that many people around the world now have a way to hear his music, and even buy it in the Internet?

I remember two respected Heavy Metal bands that on the subject of internet downloads, said: "Our business is live concerts", if people download our albums from the internet, great! The concert halls will be filled with more new fans."

Gostaria de partilhar convosco o meu ponto de vista sobre a chamada “pirataria” na Internet. Eu já baixei música da Internet, aliás, creio que todas as pessoas que conheço já o fizeram em maior ou menor grau. Parece-me algo conseqüente de uma nova tecnologia, de uma nova maneira de tocar a música no conforto de casa, do carro ou do iPod, da qual são os artistas que se devem preocupar e adaptar e não o consumidor.

Notamos que muitos artistas, que se deveriam preocupar com a qualidade do seu produto - a música - estão na realidade preocupados com as suas vendas sem respeito com o consumidor. O importante é a venda, chegando a ponto de colocar no CD algumas leis, segundo as quais eu poderei ouvir o produto onde gastei o meu dinheiro (portanto, é meu), mas não posso regravar, colocar na net, enfim, fazer o que bem entendo com algo que é minha propriedade.

Deixo um exemplo pessoal, que creio que ainda não ouvi na TV ou na rádio. A esmagadora maioria dos CD’s que comprei desde a minha adolescência até hoje foram através de descoberta pessoal. A minha curiosidade levou-me a pedir para ouvir CDs estranhos em lojas e nos últimos anos, a sacar músicas da net, que quando me agradam, me levam a querer comprar CDs. Ou seja, centenas de artistas viram os seus CDs comprados depois de eu ter ouvido as suas músicas na Internet.

Se alguns sacam da Internet sem comprar o produto, não há outros que aproveitam a Internet para fazer uma triagem da qualidade das músicas? Engraçado que as críticas mais pesadas que já ouvi às dezenas de milhões de pessoas que são supostos “piratas da Internet”, vieram de artistas de pouca expressão, mais por estarem ultrapassados no tempo e terem dificuldade em abraçar as novas tecnologias e as novas características do mercado.
Pergunto se os U2 ou a Madonna se preocupa com o download de músicas na Internet? E o artista obscuro na Ásia Central que lança um CD através de uma editora minúscula? Não agradecerá o fato de muita gente espalhada pelo mundo ter agora uma maneira de conhecer a sua música, e até de a comprar pela Internet?

Lembro-me de duas respeitadas bandas de Heavy Metal que sobre o assunto dos downloads, diziam: “O nosso negócio são os concertos ao vivo”, se as pessoas sacarem os nossos álbuns da net, óptimo, as salas de concerto estarão mais cheias com novos fãs”.
