Have you ever looked to a Robert Barto photo with attention? Imagine Mr. Barto using an early XVIII century wig. Doesn't he look like the reincarnation of Sylvius Leopold Weiss, perhaps Johann Sebastian Bach?
If you own his recordings for Naxos and treasure them as the Holy Grail, this thought has probably passed through your mind before, but if you never heard about the career of this gentleman, you should try listening and buying his 9 Weiss CDs on Naxos (cheaper price).
More seriously, while hearing this american baroque lutenist playing Weiss, it's hard not to think that this unbelievable musician could be the reincarnation of Weiss, or better, a 5 euros time-travel to german and polish Courts of the early XVIII century. Essential listening!

Escuta essencial!

Luis,
ReplyDeleteI had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Barto perform a recital here in Vancouver, Canada and I have to say it was one of the most magical evenings I've experienced in a while. I am studying the classical guitar and am curious as to how challenging learning the lute has been.

Hey Apolo, thank you so much for writing. I wish I could be at a Robert Barto recital too!
ReplyDeleteI'm very curious about the musical scene of your country, which I don't know well, and I wish you all the best in your study.
