Preparing a recital | Preparando um recital

I’ve started the last semester of the basic lute course. Now it's time to prepare my graduation recital, that when I have to play in public for 40 minutes in late June. The first weeks will be for choosing repertoire, which in students’ recitals usually follow a theme. Thus, a vocal music theme is being naturally drawn, from sacred to popular and courtesan, played on lute. This small program will have introductions or interludes with pieces written exclusively for solo lute.
We are in discussion if we’ll play Vivaldi together or a string of Renaissance duos. In conversation with the teacher, we concluded that Vivaldi did not have much to do with the Renaissance program and that these Baroque trios might require another presentation.

Lisbon and lute | Lisboa e alaúde

I arrived a few days ago from Lisbon. My hometown brings me a mixture of personal feelings, but to a history lover as I am is a true dream. The city is full of memories and surviving monuments of the great earthquake of 1755, as well as historical sites with wonderful acoustics, as the “Memória church” where the remains of the Marquis of Pombal are, which I visited after making a stop at the world-famous Belém pastries. Next to it is located the Tropical Botanical Garden and a after it, the “Jerónimos Monastery” and “Tower of Belém”, which are declared World Heritage by UNESCO, and several museums. These scenarios opened my appetite for another year of lute and repertoire research.

At the house where I grew up, my parents became fans of the instrument to which I dedicate myself and started attending concerts at the Gulbenkian Foundation. They ask me for advice to buy quality CDs and listen to the "Diaspora Sefardí" by Jordi Savall at home and in the car. However, my 9 year-old nephew found my old CD collection, acquired in my teen years with the money of hundreds of school lunches and now is a heavy metal fan. I tried to get rid of some of the most radical ones in a used CD store, so the boy does not become a vampire or may imitate Viriato * to the snows of the Estrela Mountain range. He is learning classical guitar and his younger sister attends violin lessons, that is, they are interested in music.

For my practice, I brought two Australian adjustable straps for the lute and replace the black silk strap I was using and that I started considering too funereal, although more historically correct. I also bought a cheap camcorder to start filming some lute videos, and if possible, my teacher and other colleagues aswell. Maybe I can show a bit of our personal and EMB work through Youtube.

That is it, I’ll write soon and welcome you into the musical year of 2011.

Lisbon without sheet music | Lisboa sem partituras

In the last weeks I’ve been visiting my home country and seized the opportunity to search for sheet music by the brilliant Portuguese Baroque composer Carlos Seixas (1704-1742), to eventually play on my archlute, which will be built in the middle of the year.
My choice fell upon a sonata for harpsichord that I used to hear being played by Pedro Caldeira Cabral, adapted to the Portuguese guitar, and naturally, on harpsichord. In my opinion, Seixas’ music represents well the Portuguese "Oceanic Baroque" with particular characteristics found in "modern fado, for instance, which are not found in contemporaries such as Scarlatti, Bach and Couperin.

However, I searched around the city and I didn’t find any sheet music for sale. In a couple of shops I found some piano pieces, but not even for classical guitar. Even the Lisbon Conservatory store where I used to find loads of sheet music (including those I was searching for) no longer exists.

I wonder aswell if the edition of sheet music for millions of students, teachers and other practitioners, listeners and music enthusiasts is now also done only online and for profit. But of course this is a question to which I believe I already know the answer. It’s a pity.

In the second half of November I will be on three gigs. In one day I will play solo Renaissance lute, focusing on the Spanish repertoire. To do so, I summarized my current semester of eight songs in a gig of only four: "Gallarda" by Mudarra, "Tant que Vivray" and "glosa sobre la misma cãcion" by Fuenllana, and "Mille Regretz" by Narváez.
Another day I will play lute duets with my colleague Tiago, with focus on English Renaissance and Francesco da Milano.
On the last gig day, the big novelty: I will play theorbo, accompanying Tiago on "Folies d'Espagne", and for theorbo solo I chose the "Toccata Arpeggiata" by Kapsberger (on the video below).

5000 visits reached | 5000 visitas atingidas

Yesterday, this tiny blog on a topic so narrow and difficult to post regularly, passed the mark of 5000 visits. It is a very important milestone for me, which means that through this blog, people from 67 countries, of various languages, ethnicities and religions were interested in the lute, its history and stories, my path as a student, the sound of the instrument and perhaps by the revelation of watching a lute video for the first time. I also know people who bought their first lute music CD through this blog. Others began to attend recitals and concert halls, looking for their musical preferences within the early music the lute world, which is much broader than most people might think.

So I want to thank the visitors for their time and interest, for the kindness of contributing with their visits, comments and emails, to popularize and take out of oblivion this kind of music, so beautiful, so profound and so noble. God bless you all.

New archlute ordered | Novo arquialaúde encomendado

Last week I ordered an archlute and I’m now on a short waiting list. I chose that instrument after pondering with time about the repertoire that I want to focus primarily on future years.
The option for an archlute is because of its flexibility, allowing me to continue playing Renaissance music, but at the same time allowing me to take lessons in Basso continuo without using the theorbo and adventure myself into the baroque repertoire, especially accompanying singers or musical groups. Maybe it even let me play some Late Baroque piece, like Falckenhagen, for example, depending on some different tuning.

What remains to be decided for the new instrument are details. Until now I thought of the model "Matteo Sellas" because it is smaller and easier to carry, with flattened back ribs, which according to some luthiers do not compromise the sound, quite the contrary. But anyway I would like to ask the reader’s opinions about which archlute are more interesting, sizes, sound and general characteristics. I would be much grateful for your comments.

Sting and Edin Karamazov - Dowland's "In Darkness Let me Dwell" - Anybody knows which archlute model Edin is using?

Starting this week we embarked on a project to play Vivaldi with some other students and with coordination of professor Dell'Isola and one more EMB (Brasília School of Music) violin teacher.
I'll play the lute on the trio for violin, lute and basso continuo in G minor RV85, and Tiago will play the lute on the trio for violin, lute and basso continuo in C Major RV82. Then we'll play an adaptation of the Concerto for two mandolins, with our lutes.
It seems that this event will happen at the same time as both our recitals marking the end of our basic lute courses.
